The legend behind these temples is that once Brahma and Vishnu had a fight over ascendancy of creation, to settle the dispute great Lord Shiva penetrated the 3 worlds and appeared as a huge infinite pillar of light, which was known as the Jyotirlinga. These Jyotirlinga shrines are the sites where it is believed that Shiva appeared as a column of light.

●       Mallikarjuna - Mallikarjuna is located in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh is a temple which has existed since the 2nd century. Inside the temple complex there are many shrines and magnificent halls. The temple is popularly called the kailash of south.
